Woven masks have been used over time in the Abelam and Maprik regions in
 
Yam harvest ceremonies. Yams are seen as "spiritual beings" and hold great importance
 
in the sustainability of the villages from these regions. When brought into ceremony, each
 
mask was adorned with feathers and often painted with natural earth pigments.
 
This is a finely woven example of a small yet strong in character Yam mask.
